In my case, if I were ever to marry, my formal name would most likely stay the same - Ms. H****, which is what I use now. I might hyphenate, but only because my son has my partner's surname. As it is I'm always quick to point out my partner is NOT my husband and I find the attitude in this country that marriage is some sort of achievement and women who are still 'Miss/Ms' beyond a certain age are abominations quite infuriating.
Why people are interested in my marital status so much is beyond me. I'm tempted to start signing my name with all my qualifications after instead, that would probably earn me the respect I'm not currently getting on account of my 'single' status (another pet peeve: rarely is there the option for listing yourself as 'partnered' although some do now - my maternity notes spring to mind).
