My mother rang me last night to say that she'd just had emergency eye surgery. Eep. I hope she's getting decent pain meds this time. When she had a pair of eye operations last year, for the first eye they undermedicated her and only told her the complicated meds regime verbally, when she was sitting in a post-operative daze and not taking much in, and when she asked for them to give her the regime in writing beforehand for the second op, so that she could have some clue what was going on, they accused her of being addicted to painkillers and the surgeon started threatening not to operate.

Anyway, on a slightly less agonising note, a couple of people on my friends-list have been having trouble with muscle pain lately, so I thought I'd share my technique for approaching fairly nasty pain. In my case, I had acute calcific tendinitis in my right shoulder four years ago, which is when a lump of chalk builds up sneakily in a tendon and then suddenly starts dissolving, with pain at a level that even doctors call excruciating. I got certain telltale twinges before it went nuclear, and I've been getting them on and off in the left shoulder over the last year or so. I don't fancy a month of screaming agony, being completely stoned on painkillers that cause me oodles of side-effects, and not being able to use one arm (although at that level of meds, I'm lucky if I can manage to clamber out of bed), so here's what seems to work for me. When I follow this regime, the warning twinges die away again, though I have absolutely no idea what is really going on inside my shoulder. It's good for any incidental muscle and joint pains that are lurking as well, although I'm crap at bothering with the faff for more minor matters. If and when we get a nice bigger flat, I'm hoping to have the big heat lamp permanently stationed somewhere, instead of stuck under the bed where it's a right bugger to extract.
