Firefox has been playing silly buggers with me for about a week or so now. It started when it decided to crash occasionally on LiveJournal pages. By crash, I mean that the page would suddenly refuse to go anywhere, and its "back" history would have been cleared. Closing Firefox and then trying to reopen it wouldn't work, because it would tell me that a Firefox session was still running. The only solution was a complete reboot. Since this appeared to coincide with when I last upgraded Firefox, I tried downgrading it. This at least gave me back an add-on which hadn't been compatible with the latest version (CuteMenus, which makes it much easier to skim menus when I'm having trouble reading), but unfortunately it didn't solve the problem, and Firefox is still crashing every day or so. Then I decided to try clearing my cookies and cache, in the vague hope that it would help. It didn't, and three websites decided that they no longer recognised me as a member and would not even let me reset my password. I've just been wailing chatting to
scien about this. For some very bizarre reason, I could log into these sites in IE, and then once I'd done that, Firefox would let me back in. So that's one thing sorted, although it's a complete mystery, and I swear that I did not suddenly develop an inability to type, or copy and paste, passwords.
Anyway, I'm still left with the problem about Firefox crashing. It only does it on LJ pages. Ideas, anyone? I don't even know where to start looking. Thank heavens for Lazarus.
While I'm having a moan, my pointer function is being angsty at the moment as well. What will happen is that the mouse buttons suddenly stop working, except for the scroll wheel, and this is true of both the trackpad and the external mouse. However, if I press Alt+tab, go to another window, and go back (again, this is in Firefox), the mouse buttons will work again for about a minute, and then I'll need to hop to another application and back again. It's doing this twice a week or so. I've a feeling that closing Firefox via the task manager helps, although right now I've had so much of this sort of thing going on that I'm having trouble remember the details (such as whether it then throws a hissyfit when I try to open up Firefox again). Ideas, anyone? And should I sacrifice CuteMenus and upgrade Firefox again? I think the new version might have been faster. Which also reminds me that my computer is going through stretches of being horribly slow. It is relatively new with a lovely spec and I don't think it has much excuse for this behaviour.
