Bookmarking audiobooks

I am currently getting driven dotty by iTunes' inability to bookmark audiobooks, meaning that whenever I close it down I have to write down where I've got to and hope I don't lose the bit of paper. Does anyone know any freeware which will either enable iTunes to bookmark tracks, or alternatively a good audio player I can download instead? I'm about to look at XMPlay, though not right now as D wants to get online and we don't have a working router yet (don't even get me started on that subject).
