To cheer up those who teach
Thursday, 26 April 2007 10:42 pmLocal elections are approaching in Edinburgh, and I'm getting more election leaflets through the door than actual post. They include the staid, the silly and the outright insane. They seem to be having quite a debate over whether to abolish Council Tax or not, with every party insisting that their way, and their way only, will save money for most people. I'm not sure I'd trust any of the parties to produce what they're promising, mainly because they make all sorts of wild offers which would cause enormous funding problems, such as cutting class sizes *and* increasing public transport. One candidate doesn't have a party at all ("Vote Margo"), another boasts proudly that he rides a bike and has five children (as
ghost_of_a_flea said, virility is very important in our leaders to create a Strong Scotland!) and another would like to abolish war.
Here's an amusing excerpt from the BNP leaflet. For those who don't know this, the BNP is the British National Party, i.e. the very scary people.
* It's time to get tough on the neds who are making life a nightmare for the law abiding majority. People should feel safe to walk the street at any time of the day! [Picture of teenagers sitting quietly on a wall wearing hoodies and caps.]
* The only way to get tough on crime is to get police back where they belong - on the beat. Not persecuting motorists or filling in paperwork in their offices. (And this candidate has had how many speeding fines?)
* The BNP will restore discipline and traditional teaching methods to make sure all students are literate, numerate and well educated, instead of being fed trendy PC nonsense. (Did I hear someone suggest flogging a potential plagiarist on
angevin2's journal?)
There's the expected unpleasant nonsense about immigrants and so forth, but I don't want
king_laugh to start foaming at the mouth so I'll spare you the rest.
